Mary Jo Goolsby EdD, MSN, NP-C, FAANP

Dr. Mary Jo Goolsby is the founder of the Institute for NP Excellence, LLC (INPE), created to promote excellence in NP practice, primarily through leadership development. Prior to forming INPE, she served AANP as VP of research, education, and professional practice for 12 years.  She is a past chair of the FAANP Program, served on JAANP's editorial board for approximately 20 years, is a past associate editor of JAANP's Fellows Speak column, and served on the editorial committee for the FAANP Forum newsletter throughout its publication.

Dr. Goolsby has been an adult NP since 1982 and her clinical experience has included adult primary care, as well as specialty practice in both endocrinology and pulmonology. In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Goolsby has over 30 years of experience in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of NP education, including NP academic training and NP accredited continuing education. She has conducted extensive research on NP practice and the NP workforce.

Dr. Goolsby has published three textbooks, numerous chapters and articles, and has presented internationally and nationally on NP practice. She has participated in panels and programs sponsored by organizations such as IOM, AHRQ, NIH, and CDC, as well as a number of other inter-professional collaborations. Dr. Goolsby was the 2013 recipient of the Loretta C. Ford Award for Advancement of the Nurse Practitioner Role in Health Care.  In 2020, she received AANP's Sharp Cutting Edge Award.

Dr. Goolsby earned her BSN at Emory University, MSN at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and EdD in Higher Education at the Florida State University.
