Richard Ricciardi PhD, CRNP

Richard Ricciardi, CRNP, PhD, FAANP, FAAN, is a Professor at The George Washington University School of Nursing. Prior to joining GW, Ric served as the Director, Division of Practice Improvement, and the Senior Advisor for Nursing, at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). At AHRQ, Ric’s research focused on ambulatory care practice improvements in the areas of team functioning, team-based care, outcomes measurement, evidence-based treatment of acute and chronic pain, and improving patient safety and quality. Prior to joining AHRQ in 2010, Ric served on active duty in the Army for 30 years, where he held numerous positions as a pediatric and family nurse practitioner, clinical scientist, and senior leader. In his last two assignments on active duty, Ric served as Chief of Nursing Research at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (2006-2008), and Director of Research at the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (2008-2010). In 2020, Ric was recalled back to active duty for 8 months where he served as a Colonel and Medical Director for COVID-19 operations, treatment and public health response at Fort Leonard Wood.

In addition to his leadership and scholarship in the areas of healthcare delivery, education, and policy, Ric has extensive corporate governance expertise.  Ric has served on the Board of Directors of several nonprofit corporations and professional societies, including service as President of Sigma Theta Tau International, Chair of Sigma Building Corporation, and as Treasurer and Vice-President of Sigma.  Ric is also a Past-President of the Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP),  and Past-President of the NAPNAP Foundation. Ric maintains his clinical practice, serving as a nurse practitioner at Mercy Health Clinic caring for uninsured and underserved populations.
