Melanie Elizabeth Mabrey DNP, ACNP-BC, FAANP

Dr. Mabrey serves as the North Carolina Board of Nursing's Advanced Practice Consultant. She assists with administration and implementation of the North Carolina Nursing Practice Act. Dr. Mabrey provides professional consultative and educational services to the practice community and to the public with a specialty focus on the four APRN roles. Melanie is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner whose clinical practice and scholarship focuses on chronic illness, particularly in endocrinology and diabetes mellitus. Dr. Mabrey continues to serve on the faculty of Duke University School of Nursing as a consulting associate, teaching in the nurse practitioner program. She has extensive clinical experience in care of the chronically ill patients. Since 2002 her practice has focused extensively on inpatient diabetes management at Duke. She established and served as the director of their Inpatient Endocrine Nurse Practitioner Program. In 2006, Melanie started a new endocrine/diabetes service at Duke Regional Hospital and went on to serve as the associate medical. Her doctoral project, publications, and numerous presentations focus on care of patients with diabetes across the continuum of care. She earned her BSN from East Carolina University in 1993, her MSN from the University of South Carolina in 2001, DNP from Duke University in 2012. Dr. Mabrey was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau in 1992, is a member of the North Carolina Nurses Association, the American Diabetes Association, the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist, and was honored to be inducted as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners in 2014.
