Donald Gardenier DNP, FNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN

Dr. Donald Gardenier is a nurse practitioner in clinical practice at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, California, providing care in gastroenterology and hepatology. He is also adjunct assistant professor at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He was Assistant Professor and clinical program director at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City from 1999 - 2016. He has conducted clinical research and lectured extensively on liver disease and other topics, has authored multiple publications, and served on numerous local, state, and national commissions and committees. He has worked for many years to promote patient care particularly among the underserved and marginalized patient groups, having served on advisory groups and task forces. From 2011 until 2020, Dr Gardenier edited the opinion column "Point/Counterpoint" in the Journal for Nurse Practitioners, selecting topics, engaging authors, and editing content to produce 110 columns on topics of interest to nurse practitioners. As part of his outreach for the column, he engaged nurse practitioner policy and thought leaders, educators, physicians, patients, and many other stakeholders to provide a broad issue-oriented dialog. In addition to AANP fellowship he is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing which also has designated him an Edge Runner for his innovative work in health care delivery. He served as a director of the American College of Nurse Practitioners from 2009 - 2012 and then as a director of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners from its creation in 2013 until 2016. Dr Gardenier earned his DNP from Case Western Reserve University in 2009 designing and conducting an original study looking at the effect of social support and its components on individuals living with HIV/AIDS with concomitant behavioral health issues. His findings were published in the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care. A first generation American, he is fluent in Dutch and Spanish. Dr Gardenier is a returned Peace Corps volunteer.
