Charon A Pierson PhD, GNP, FAAN, FAANP

Charon A. Pierson, PhD, GNP, BC, FAAN, FAANP is the former editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Association (formerly Academy) of Nurse Practitioners and the founding editor of the quarterly journal Nurse Practitioner Forum. She also served as the editor of Nurse Author & Editor, a quarterly, international newsletter dedicated to nurse authors, reviewers, and editors, from 2007-2012. She has presented and published extensively on issues related to ethics in writing and publication.  In 2012 Dr. Pierson was elected to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Council; in 2015 she was elected  (and re-elected to serve a second term in 2017) Secretary of the Trustee Board and Council. This is an international organization of more than 11,000 editors and publishers with an elected governing body of 40 council members. The COPE Council provides a forum for discussion of cases of research and publication misconduct and provides advice to editors and publishers on ethics in publishing. Dr. Pierson specializes in gerontology and access to long-term care services for vulnerable elderly. She has taught FNP, ANP, and GNP students for more than 25 years at California State University at Long Beach, the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the University of Texas at El Paso. She maintained a clinical practice with the Kaiser Permanente Long-Term Care Team as a call-in GNP in Hawaii and in private practice in California. She recently retired from the University of Texas El Paso where she was the Director of the Center for Aging. She completed a PhD in Sociology at the University of Hawaii in 1999 with a focus in medical sociology, ethnomethodology, and conversation analysis. She has published both clinical and research articles and book chapters on urinary incontinence, feeding problems in dementia, end-of-life decision-making, euthanasia, and multidisciplinary collaboration in the hospital setting. Dr. Pierson has received awards for excellence in nursing journalism from Sigma Theta Tau and excellence in nurse practitioner practice from both the California Coalition of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She was inducted as a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners in June 2000 and elected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2013. She was awarded a John A. Hartford Foundation Post-doctoral Fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco through the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Program in 2001-2003. She is also a certified ELNEC Trainer for end-of-life care.
